Inspired by Bishop Lewis of Ontario, the Provincial Synod of the Canadian Church formally requested that members of the Anglican Communion meet in a ‘General Council of her members gathered from every land’. In a letter to Archbishop Charles Longley (1794–1868) in 1865, it asked that he convene a Synod of bishops from home and abroad (see p. 210). Such was the origin of the first Lambeth Conference.
